Hearts Mend

‘I’ve never been one for unchallenging art and most in the music world likely don’t know the other side of me. That as being a nurse, specialised in cardiology, critical care and emergency. I wrote this song reflecting on the process of moving beyond burnout. I wanted to document what allows nurses, doctors and health professionals alike, to provide personalised and individualised care at an emotional distance. There isn’t a vocational worker alive that doesn't get affected by their work and I guess what I’ve found, is there is a need for a level of apathy when caring, if you will… Yes you are being caring, compassionate, loving etc. but that is very different to caring for and loving your wife, friends and children. The reality is, especially in critical care, that people die and sometimes horrifically or worse still you are forced to hang onto the unviable longer than you feel you ought to. Reflected in the lyric: ’Tortured by policy, implemented by medicine. Some days they're made to live, other days they’re allowed to die’ I guess being apathetic to death and loss could be seen as a essential part of the job. You see it day in and out, but you also are a partner, wife, husband, parent etc getting an income. At the end of the day, it’s a job. You need to be able to care for the dying and critically ill, but also not give a fuck at all…As reflected in the chorus: ‘Gotta give a few fucks before I try to pull them over, & tell them, it’s over’ Caring, but not caring is the dissonance this song is about and producing it definitely has helped me have perspective on nursing and burnout. Hopefully it will for others in the game and also give insight to those that aren't. -Tim Godwin 28.4.20‘
